Some history 
The Dodge & Burn technique, now used in the professional retouching industry, comes from the time when photographers were doing their photo manipulations in the Darkroom. The tools were used to hide light or let light through, in order to make an image darker or lighter. In contrast of photomontage techniques, airbrushing and polaroid scratching, the dodge & burn was considered as a traditional art.
